Study: Vitamin D Makes For A Strong Heart
December 1, 2009 by Personal Liberty News Desk
A recent study, conducted at the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City, suggests that vitamin D contributes to a healthy heart, and that an inadequate amount of the vitamin can lead to stroke or heart disease.
Researchers found that patients with extremely low levels of vitamin D were 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 78 percent more likely to have a stroke than those with normal levels of the vitamin.
"This is important because vitamin D deficiency is easily treated," said Heidi May, one of the authors of the study. "If increasing levels of vitamin D can decrease some risk associated with these cardiovascular diseases, it could have a significant public health impact," she added.
Recent studies have also linked vitamin D to the regulation of blood pressure, glucose control and inflammation—three important risk factors related to heart disease.
The Office of Dietary Supplements says that very few natural foods contain vitamin D. The best known sources can be found in the flesh of salmon, tuna and mackerel as well as milk.

This is the kind of stuff no Dr. I know will tell you about or even cares about. Selling pills is the way to go..
What a bunch of cretans.
Actually, WilliSmed – (with the bad language), MD’s are NOT cretans. My personal MD, who is very traditional, ran a Vitamin D level on me just 2 weeks ago and has advised me to take additional Vitamin D supplementation since my levels were so low. He also has been very supportive of my taking Fish Oil/Omega 3′s and extra CO-enzyme 10.
My Cholestrol is high and together we agreed I would take Zetia 10mg daily and also add Red Rice Yeast -his suggestion, not mine, to my vitamin mix and we will recheck levels sometime after the first of the year. I am a registered nurse. Many MD’s are interested in supplements and are up on the literature. I had been having trouble with arrythmias but after this past year of Omega 3′s and extra Co enzme 10 – arrythmias appear to be a thing of the past. I NEVER like to take prescription meds if I don’t have too. I am delighted to have found a good Primary Care MD I can communicate with.
I also go to a Dr. that agrees with Natural Health and supplements. He is a regular MD too. However, I was going to my gyn and she had a hissie fit when I told her what I was taking. I don’t go to her anymore.
Actually my PCP (Primary Care Physician – MD) told me to take 5K units D3 and Omega 3 mix twice a day
Vitamin D is absolutely necessary for good health. The fact that most American MDs wouldn’t be caught dead telling their patients to make sure they ‘get enough’ makes a strong case for sending them BACK to medical school to COMPLETE their inadequate education.
It wouldn’t hurt to demand that American MDs had to spend several years in Africa, to remind them that people who don’t eat right will not be healthy. Then, perhaps, they could see themselves as true authorities in health and proper nutrition – instead of overpaid pill-pushers who left their integrity at the front door of a medical school.
s c,
actually my Dr. prescribed 50,000 units of vitamin D for me twice a week. Especially this time of the year you have to watch it as your body needs strong sunshine to process it and your body won’t take in enough. The fact that people are3 blocking the sun with sunscreens and such is starting a whole population of vitamin D deficient people! A few minutes a few times a day in the sun without a sun block is a good idea and not one to likely cause skin cancer.
I forgot to add, I also take 1000 units of vitamin E every nite and when I had the cath done on my arteries I was very clean and that is almost unheard of in diabetics. It also helps my sugar levels. I stopped for a week to check, changed nothing else, and my levels went up about 25 points!!!
I’ve been taking Vitamin D since reading this article a couple weeks ago and have noticed that I feel less stressed and more relaxed lately. I’m taking 2 500′s a day! Thanks for the tip
