Study: PCOS symptoms may be relieved with acupuncture
August 28, 2009 by Personal Liberty News Desk
New research suggests electro-acupuncture can benefit women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and lower the risk of metabolic disorders that often accompany the condition.
PCOS affects up to 10 percent of women of reproductive age and results from higher levels of androgens leading to ovarian cysts, irregular menstrual cycles and, in some cases, infertility.
To test the efficacy of an alternative medicine resource, Swedish scientists divided 20 women into three groups – one receiving low-frequency electro-acupuncture, one engaging in exercise and a control group.
They found that acupuncture led to more regular menstrual cycles, reduced testosterone levels and reduced waist circumference, while exercise helped reduce weight and body mass index.
In addition, the study showed the usefulness of exercise and acupuncture in reducing sympathetic nerve activity, which is common in women with PCOS, and may lead to hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese medicine practice of inserting and manipulating very thin needles at precise points on the body to relieve pain and restore health.

This looks interesting but leaves me with lots of questions.
Please include information about the study for people that want to research further. What journal? How recent?
Acupuncture works wonders for back pain, breathing problems, & many other modalities too numerous to mention.
I have PCOS and have been receiveding acupuncture treatments for over a year now. It is amazing how much better I feel. The severity of my PCOS has already affected me adversely and I am one step away from Diabetes because of it. Regular acupuncture and a careful eating regime is very important to reduce the effects of PCOS.
BE VERY SELECTIVE in who you choose as an acupuncturist. I was extremely lucky and found one that is not only very good in what she does, but also an RN AND extremely knowledgable in Chinese Medicine and various disorders. She is a true healer. Don’t be afraid of searching around until you find one you are comfortable with. (And the needles are nothing to worry about! ;D )
Did I happen to mention that Acupuncture also helps to stimulate weight loss? Another added benefit when dealing with PCOS!
I get a cortisone shot every month for for 40 years allergies, allergic rhinitis, itching and eczema. Does anyone know if acupuncture will help with this? or another solution?
Thanks
