Obama administration orders interrogations probe
August 25, 2009 by Personal Liberty News Desk
Shifting its approach from earlier this year, when it said there will be no investigations of the controversial interrogation techniques practiced during the Bush administration, the government has tasked a federal prosecutor with determining whether the CIA interrogations of terrorist suspects were illegal.
John Durham, an assistant U.S. attorney in Connecticut, was asked by Attorney General Eric Holder to conduct a preliminary review of available material to determine if there is enough evidence to warrant a full investigation of whether anti-torture laws were broken during the questioning of detainees in places like Guantanamo Bay.
The administration also reaffirmed that intelligence personnel acting in good faith and under the guidance from previous administration’s lawyers will not be prosecuted.
The decision was praised by human and civil rights organizations, which have been pressing President Obama since he took office last January to order a thorough investigation into what they believe was torture practiced by U.S. government employees.
However, according to Larry Cox, Amnesty International USA’s executive director, "[Holder's decision] is a welcome, yet incomplete, step."
He adds, "Any meaningful investigation would encompass both those who claimed they were following orders and those who designed and demanded that the illegal policies be implemented."
On Monday, it was also announced that Obama approved the creation of an interrogation unit that will become part of the FBI, meaning the White House will be able to exert a more direct control over its work.

The interrogation unit that Obama has created is illigal but as usual
Obama is getting by with it (for now). If you remember what Palosi said
on T.V. That anyone who disagrees with Obama will be considered a
terrorest. She also said people who show up at town meetings and
protest Obama’s health care plan, wear swastikas and are radicals.
Rod,
I’ve been to two Republican town halls, and yes, there were repubs, who had swastika’s on signs, shirts, and ball caps. I was so embarrassed to belong to a party that has that radical fringe. What do you consider these people? Some of our veterans were upset that these people were degrading our Country and Party and terrorizing their wifes who had come seeking answers. I was going to take my niece and nephew, 18 and 17 so they could see how town halls worked. I knew the radicals had been at the Dem’s town halls but really didn’t think they would come to ours. Had to call taxi for kids to go home.
if you saw anyone there with swastika’s it wasn’t the ones that were there because they are worried about their kids future , those are the ones getting paid by ACORN to disrupt the meetings and lay the blame on the really troubled ones that want answers … HONEST ANSWERS !!!!! wake up man . get your head out of the sand .. this country is in really bad shape ..
Quite a twisted imagination you have larry, dream on
Larry,
I am no pansy, so I asked the man holding sign which party he belonged too, and he proudly whipped out his Republican voters registration card, and proceeded to ask me the same question, upon which I whipped out my Republican voter card. He then called me a communist bitch and told me that I should have known he was a Repub, as they don’t let any pussy Dem’s into their organization… Oh, what a revelation… I was just so proud. These weren’t Acorn, these were home grown redneck republicans, who hate this country.
What law did it break? if you make such an allegation you should back it up.
YOU SAY: If you remember what Palosi said
on T.V. That anyone who disagrees with Obama will be considered a
terrorest.
We both know this statement is an outright lie.
Do not know if she said that about those wearing swastikas but theya re radical unless of course you believe that hitler was not radical which few of us do.
Waterboarding is tame compared to what they should have gotten.
This is a rational statement when it is coming from a sadist, which you sound like
The Obama administration wants terrorists to be treated like common criminals with all the rights the citizens of this country have. These allegations were investigated 5 years ago by the JUstice Dept. and found without merit. This current administration is desperate to find anything on the previous administration instead of trying to take care of this country and its citizens now. They are dismantling the programs that have kept us safe for 9 years. I feel less safe now since January 20. The terrorists have no timetable. They’ll wait until they know it’s safe to strike us again
All baloney, the investigation five years ago. that you talk about, amounts to a murderer investigating his own murder case, do you really put and objectivity with that type of investigation. We do not know what keep us safe during this time, could it be that the terrorists did not have any plans to attack us and bush and co had nothing to do with it, it seems to me if they had squashed an attack they would have bragged big time about it. Besides 9-11 happened on Bushes watch, so did he really protect us?? I think not and that is not to say he could of but it is clear he was not interested in it until after 9-11. What are the Obama administration dismantling, you neglected to tell us that
Interrogate the interrogators, sounds like a sideshow to me.
Are you smiling, Smilee.
Will you still say that if it proves they committed crimes or do you believe the Bush administration should be above the law. The process is about determining the truth and this is part of that process, if they didn’t do anything wrong then they should welcome this as then in the end they will be more believable of course if they are guilty then it will be known and it seems that their concern lie there
Either way this is not a smiling matter but a very serious matter, we are still a nation of laws, I’m starting to wonder if you right wingers no longer believe you should be subject to law just those you disagree with should be, SAD
