Marijuana Compound May Help Treat Pain Linked To Sickle Cell Disease

Results of a recent University of Minnesota Medical School study suggest that a marijuana compound may be an alternative treatment option for patients suffering from the chronic pain associated with sickle cell disease.
Using an animal model, lead investigator Kalpna Gupta and his colleagues monitored the neural pathways of subjects that were experiencing musculoskeletal pain and temperature sensitivity, two of the more prominent symptoms often experienced by sickle cell disease patients.
The research team then treated the animals with opioids—the traditional pain remedy for sickle cell disease—or cannabinoids, a synthetic marijuana compound.
They discovered that not only did cannabinoids lessen pain with the same effectiveness as conventional medication, it did so in much smaller doses.
"This paper provides proof that we can use other classifications of drugs to treat pain in patients with sickle cell disease," said Gupta. "Cannabinoids offer great promise in the treatment of chronic and acute pain, and they’re effective in much lower amounts than opioids—the only currently approved treatment for this disease."
He added that opioids have been known to adversely affect a patient’s kidneys and blood vessels when taken in the doses necessary to treat the chronic pain associated with sickle cell disease. 
If this is true, it would be a fitting time for a certain prez to see to it that those who could benefit most from this technique would be able to get the help they need and deserve. By the way, is it just a coincidence that a certain ethnic group is more likely to suffer fom sickle cell anemia than any other?
I wonder if Herr Obummer has a clue as to which ethnic group is most likely to get sickle cell anemia? Beyond that, I wonder if he gives a damn.

embrace this new way of treating the pain some of us have to suffer.
There is no question as to which side our President will support on the issue
and how much help he will offer in making it so.
Now when they are born they can get a handycap sticker for their car and a full
bag of relief for the short walk in the store.
The reason for the pain in Sickle Cell anemia is that the blood cells cannot supply adequate oxygen to the body. The blood cells resemble sickles when observed under a microscope. The blood cells cannot carry oxygen as a normal cell. Thus the pain, just like “charlie-horses” are painful from lack of potassium in the muscles. This is just a ploy to promote marijuana use. The disease is usually confined to the African-American descent. It is hard to believe that over 60 yrs. have passed and no cure. It will have to be up to
the African-American community to eliminate by those, who have the disease or trait, not having children.
This prez refuses to distance himself from Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood [aka 'better living through killing babies, especially black babies']. I see no reason to assume that the prez has a conscience or gives a damn about any black man, woman or child. He is, in effect, happily carrying out Hitler’s concentration camp whims.
Malcom X would have understood it and acted on it. If groups like the Black Panthers could understand what is so twisted about a black prez who shows his black pride 24/7 B U T couldn’t care less about slaughtering black babies at the same time, perhaps the collective mental fog would clear and Mr. Obama would suddenly find himself in a VERY uncomfortable position.
Wouldn’t it be more than interesting to see Black Panthers AND conservatives unite to get rid of a common enemy? All it takes is open eyes, an open mind and the all-consuming wrath of the court of public opinion. RIGHT ON!

When I was a teenager, I smoked marijuana all the time. But, when I decided to have children I stopped. But, I suffer from severe menstrual problems, and if it were legal , I would go back to it in a New York minute. It truly does help stop pain. I think a lot of people could truly benefit from marijuana. Alcohol causes liver disease, but I do not know of marijuana causing any ill effects. It never did to me any way. I do pray that the day will come when it is legalized , I promise you if it was, I would not be out driving on it. And it would take away my pain. But, I will not use it now because I will not break the law. But, I have to say, the law does not make any sense on this. At least not to me. Just wanted to give my view point, thank you .
