Abortion Takes Center Stage In Healthcare Reform Debate
November 16, 2009 by Personal Liberty News Desk
The House of Representatives passed its version of the healthcare reform bill in early November, and as the battle moves to the Senate some legislators have threatened to withdraw support if the language of the abortion amendment remains unchanged.
Liberal Democrats are unhappy about the so-called Stupak-Pitt amendment that, according to Politico.com, prohibits coverage of abortion in the public option and bars anyone receiving a federal subsidy from purchasing a health insurance plan that includes abortion. In addition, it prevents private insurers from offering plans through the exchange that include abortion coverage to both subsidized and unsubsidized individuals.
Media reports suggest that among the opponents are Democratic Representatives Diana DeGette of Colorado and Louise Slaughter of New York, who wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama saying that they would withdraw support of the final version of the bill if the amendment stays.
In the Senate, Claire McCaskill of Missouri tweeted that while she did not think the current law banning federal dollars for abortions should be changed, an amendment to that effect would "go too far," especially given its restrictions on private insurers.
The White House also appears to be unhappy with the amendment, as President Obama told ABC News that "this is a healthcare bill, not an abortion bill," and added he wanted to ensure "we are not in some way sneaking in funding for abortions, but, on the other hand, that we’re not restricting women’s insurance choices."

I don’t think the amendment was ever meant to stay. I believe pelosi made sure it stayed in long enough to get the votes needed for another “Historical” moment. Can’t have enough “historical moments” with this administration/congress.
It will be gone ASAP after all the Axelrod already stated the obama is already working to remove it.

EVERY ONE READ THEIR KORAN {BIBLE} IT PLAINLY SAYS TO KILL US> THINK YOU KIDS HEAD CUT OFF. THAT IS THEIR METHOD> IT’S ALMOST DONE NOW.
YOU LEFT OUT THE STATEMENT—-THIS IS NOT ABOUT HEALTH CARE AT ALL BUT ABOUT TOTAL CONTROL OF OUR LIVES—AND THEN ON TO ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT
Those who want abortion paid for by the Federal Govt continue to be unhappy with this amendment. Of course, because the amendment is clear that no Federal money, directly or indirectly, is to be used to fund abortion. No more, no less. Non-federal, private-only funded plans are not limited at all. The Whiners want private plans, subsidized with Federal money, to include abortion funding.
It’s hard to comprehend that people of good will would want to force half the population to pay for something they believe is cold-blooded killing of innocent children (a stance to which science leans strongly).
Let’s label it like it actually is: Government run healthcare is commusism; communism is evil; communists should be executed.
I just don’t get why some people want to kill a baby they are having, or could have. “Woe unto those who harm the innocent. It would be better that a mill weight br plaved around their neck and they be cast into the sea.” I also don’t understand why people want the government to pay for health care when this is our responsibility. We, the parents, are the ones that are supposed to protect and provide for our children and not the government. I’m also tired of hearing about how women want abortions instead of taking the responsibility of raising the child they are going to have in a few months. This nation, that I served more than 20 years, has had so much moral decay since the days of FDR that our founding fathers would be shocked at what we have become. This is not what they had envisioned for this country. A country based of the christian aspect of freedom, laws based on The 10 Commandments, etc. I remember reading about 5 years ago, when I was fighting in Iraq, that our country needed another 40 million workers for the work force. I was thinking that isn’t that the same number of abortions performed in our country to date or is it more now? There are only certain types of women who want abortions:
1. Women who are self centered and think that a baby will keep them from making whore out of themselves. No more singles life, boo hoo!
2. Women who cannot have children because of age or defect.
3. The liberals who claim that “it’s their life”, but don’t go to church. They also want a free ride instead of taking it upon themselves to improve their own lives.
All of these kinds of women have no honor and are probably treated this way by our society, I hope so. All I have to say is that if these women don’t want children, they should wait till they get married before having a sexual relationship with someone. Having children then will be easier(someone there to support you) and more fulfilling in your life.
Seriously, we all know this is going to pass whether we like it or not. If the GOP would cut out the grandstanding on the abortion issue, and start debating the fact that someone is trying to MANDATE ME AND EVERY OTHER CITIZEN TO PAY FOR HEALTH CARE, they might actually get my vote next year. They really just can’t see the forest for the trees on this.
Both sides are plunging us off the cliff.
This is a red herring issue meant to distract us and keep us battling over BS.
I think you’re right.
THE REPUBICANS ARE SPINELESS ON THE ISSUE OF ABORTION AND ALWAYS HAVE
BEEN. THEY DON’T WANT TO ROCK THE BOAT, TO MUCH. MURDER IS MURDER, IT
DON’T MATTER THE AGE OF THE VICTIM OR THE METHOD, USED. MURDER IS MURDER. AS FAR AS, CHOICE GOES, WOMEN MAKE THE CHOICE! (LAY DOWN OR NOT
TO LAY DOWN) THEN GOD CHOOSES, LET THERE BE LIFE OR NOT BE LIFE!
PLAIN AND SIMPLE. THIS MAY GET WIPED-OUT, IT MAY BE TOO UPSETTING FOR THE MURDERS!
I would rather see proof of success on small-scale approaches
before entrusting our national economy to a huge decision.
