Confessions Of An Illegal Alien

I believe Arizona’s Immigration Law S.B. 1070 is going to be damn effective. In fact I think it should be adopted across the United States. What special insight do I have into the matter? I used to be an illegal alien.
Twenty-seven years ago this month I was sitting at my desk in the Peyton Building in downtown Spokane, Wash., and I got a letter from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). I jerked it open and realized my worst fears. My work visa had not been extended.
Immigrating to the United States had been a disaster right from the start, even though it shouldn’t have been. My dad, C.V. was a U.S. citizen by right of his father being born in Oklahoma. At least that’s what the U.S. State Department said when they issued C.V. a U.S. passport.
Yet INS thought otherwise. They hadn’t forgotten that C.V. had sold gold to Americans when it was illegal for them to own it. INS wanted to deport him. It was a legal fight that would take a decade to resolve. In fact a U.S. Federal judge finally ruled in C.V.’s favor a few months after his death in 1990.
But on that day in 1983 the only thing that mattered was the letter on my desk; the letter that said I had to leave the U.S. or face deportation. It didn’t matter that I had paid my taxes, bought a house and that my wife and I had an American-born son.
Despite the fact my dad was ill I decided that I didn’t really have a choice. Better to move back under my own terms than to be roped-up like a criminal and be “escorted” by deportation bus.
Of course my dad, who was also my boss, was dead set against me going back to Canada. Besides the fact that he hated the Federal government, he had a U.S. passport that proved to him that I was entitled to a green card. He talked to his lawyer Bob Magnuson, who was the brother of Idaho mining legend Harry Magnuson, and set up a meeting with a young immigration lawyer named Dan Keane.
Before Dan became an immigration and criminal lawyer he had worked as an INS agent. In fact his father was a well known immigration judge.
I showed Dan the INS letter and he read it carefully. Then he smiled and said, “So what’s the problem?”
“What’s the problem? This letter says if I don’t leave I am going to be deported!”
“That’s not likely to happen. You’re dad’s citizenship is going to get sorted out and when that happens you will get a green card. Until then I wouldn’t worry about it.”
I told Dan I was plenty worried about it. That I was afraid to get so much as a speeding ticket; that the cop would check on my immigration status and that my wife and I would be headed for Canada.
Dan started laughing. “Hell John, the cops don’t enforce immigration law. They don’t care.”
“They don’t care!” I was astonished. Here I was, living illegally in a country and this lawyer—my lawyer—was telling me that law enforcement didn’t care.
“You could get caught robbing a bank and your immigration status probably wouldn’t be called into question,” explained Dan.
Because of Dan’s advice and my father imploring me to stay, I decided to be an illegal until there was a ruling on C.V.’s citizenship. Fortunately I was given amnesty and granted a green card by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. A decade later I became a U.S. citizen.
I have always been grateful for the opportunity to become an American. But I also know it would never have happened if I had fretted about the police enforcing the law. And while Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has been called a bigot for signing S.B. 1070, she has struck upon an idea that is long overdue: That state law enforcement should enforce U.S. laws and that in doing so the U.S. can at least slow the flood of illegals entering the country.
In fact, on July 12th azcentral.com wrote: “The upcoming enforcement of SB 1070 has caused many illegal immigrants to flee Arizona.”
It is hard for me to understand why the Obama administration is challenging assistance from local law enforcement when clearly the Federal government needs all the help it can get.
There are as many as 30 million illegal aliens in the U.S. That’s the population of Canada. And no place has been impacted harder than Arizona.
According to the Connecticut Law Tribune, “Three state counties have been lost to violent Mexican drug cartels. More than a thousand attempt to cross the border every day. Between 1996 and 2009, the illegal alien population in Arizona increased 300 percent.”
The CLT goes on to point out that, “In 18 months alone, more than 22,000 people were killed in an ongoing drug war in Mexico near the Arizona border. Thugs are now throwing rocks at the heads of our border patrol agents.”
Yet even as Arizona suffers the highest kidnapping rate in the world outside Mexico City, the Obama administration wants to obstruct Arizona from protecting its own people who are, after all, American citizens.
U.S. News & World Report says there may be method to the Federal government’s madness, with both the Obama administration and the Republican Party, “spending way too much time bowing to the interests of illegal immigrants (who come in all races and colors) and refusing to enforce existing laws or pass new ones limiting immigration to that which improves our environment and our economy.”
Through the Justice Department President Barack Obama declares that S.B. 1070, “illegally intrudes on federal prerogatives,” and further states that Federal law “trumps state statutes.”
Is the State Department serious? After all, if somebody is hijacking an airplane or kidnapping someone across state lines do we worry whether they are arrested by the Feds or the local cops? Of course we don’t. So why then should we worry who is enforcing immigration laws? We should only worry that they are being enforced.
As a person who once feared deportation I am not sure what if any of S.B. 1070 has to do with race or racism. I knew that if the INS caught me I was in fact going back to Canada. It wasn’t like they were going to say, “Oh heck you’re a white guy, we will let you stay.” As far as I could see back then and right now, Federal immigration laws are color blind. It is the Federal government which is blind to America’s needs.

And he did a wonderful job, at least according to the record of facts. Under him, employment at an all time high, unemployment at an all time low. Stock market at an all time high. Freedom brought to a couple of nations. And now, the democrats are screwing it all up. Just knowing that there wasnt any way McCain was going to get elected, and knowing a democrat tax monster was coming, sent the economy into a tailspin his last year, as business’s tightened up to save money for the new incoming tax monsters. And their fears were confirmed as the usurper was elected. Now they have a leader who cant remember the name of the guy heading the war, then they fire him for telling the truth in an interview that the president only talks to him once every six weeks. Now we have more GI’s getting killed in one day than we did at any point in this war. They havent a clue what to do, and have steered off the course of victory that they were on. And everybody who knows anything, knows, without a doubt, and as a fact, that the democrats want this Iraq and Afghanistan thing to go down the tubes as a dismal failure, so that they can keep pointing the finger at Bush and the Republicans. It so sad, but its true if one is interested in the truth at all. For it to suceed, is bad for the democrats. Failure is good for them. And they know it. That is how anti-American they have become, that they would have America fail to give themselves more power. Wake up America, and get them out ASAP. If they had stayed the course, and had any intent of following through with the plans in place, things would be a lot better. But they want failure, for their own benefit. No one, interested in the truth and reality can doubt that for a single minute. This admin is a dismal failure, and all they offer is to do what they did to get elected, and that is to stand on their soap box in the public square, and point fingers and place blame. Thats all they brought to the table at the onset, and that is still all they offer. Complete failures, and their 15 minutes of fame is running out.

I am a Republican and I loved Reagan but he made several bad mistakes and one was the amnesty that passed during his administration with the promise it would never happen again. We recognize the rights of others and “the pursuit of happiness.” One of the few recognized responsibilities of the federal government is to enforce our borders and protect the people. Your overly-simplistic, open border attitude shows you lack of thought in this matter. I think if you moved your family to the Arizona border you might change your mind.

Kimbo, you are spot on. I think we need to adopt the laws of Mexico itself on immigration. Our immigration “laws” pale in comparison but you hear literally nothing on this! If you want to live in Mexico legally, you have to PROVE you have a job there to support yourself, you can not apply for any public assistence, you can not own any land and the list goes on of “you have to PROVE” and “you can nots”. You see any of THAT in OUR “laws”? So why was Mexico griping about the Arizona law????
It would do no good for the U.S. to adopt the same immigration laws that Mexico has. We already have adequate laws now. But the wimps in charge of enforcing them won’t do their job. If we had Mexico’s laws, we’d just ignore them, too. We need a President Brewer in office!
I know you know this, but for those who don’t seem to get it…Mexico doesn’t want us enforcing illegal immigration laws because MX illegals send most of their earnings to their families in MX; thus, aiding their economy. That’s aside from the free $$ our federal government sends the MX government. Ludicrous.
We have laws addressing this, just our federal government doesnt want to enforce them, all clamoring for the hispanic vote. Thats all they care about, votes. However, they cant see the forest because of the tree’s. If they address it, and shut this down, the person that does this would garner an awful lot of votes. The national drive by media doesnt present that, as they dont report the truth, but that is what would happen. That person would win an election in a landslide, because thats what the majority of American’s want. We actually see and understand the danger of letting Mexico send their criminals and diseased in here, and letting Al Quaida and everyone pass through there for the right amount of money. I have lived in Mexico for 5 years and what you say about Mexican immigration laws is NOT correct. As an immigrant I am allowed to own property here, with the exception of within 50 kilometers of the beach or along the US/Mexican border. If I want to buy property in any of these places (like the Pacific coast) it is put into a trust of which I would have autonomous control. For the most part, immigrants are not allowed to work in Mexico if that job would take away the job for a Mexican national. Saying that, there are many US citizens who work at jobs or own businesses in Mexico with the blessing of the government. Particularly if that job or business helps the local economy. One must prove to the government that they have enough income coming into their bank account each month to support themselves, so as to not be a drain on the Mexican economy. If I am found to be in Mexico illegally, I would be jailed for a time and deported. Mexican immigration laws are MUCH tougher than US immigration laws. It seems that the US has sown it’s own seeds of destruction by not passing tougher laws.
Part of the reason so many Mexicans cross the border illegally is that getting a US visa is often a years-long process (3-10 years) and costs several thousand dollars. Many illegals only want to work to make their family’s lives better in Mexico, with no intention to stay forever. Most want to eventually go home to Mexico and live out their lives in better conditions that they had before they crossed to the US.
When you really think about it, the illegals are not as big a drain on the US or states economy as the media would have you believe. Most illegals pay rent and in states where property taxes pay for public schooling you can bet that property tax is included in their cost of rent. Many pay into SS and have taxes withheld from their paychecks. An illegal would NEVER put in for a deserved refund of state or federal taxes and will NEVER use their paid-for SS at retirement. That’s billions of dollars being paid into government coffers that will never be returned to those who paid into the “system”. The media and liberal/conservative factions don’t want you to come up with the truth by looking at the facts. They want you to believe the “facts” they put out, being assured that most Americans won’t use their brains but just regurgitate “party” line.
I don’t believe the US government really wants to stop illegal immigration. After all, who would pick the grapes and lettuce, sheet rock their houses or cook their restaurant food–all at a wage that Americans wouldn’t even consider. And abandon the billions overpaid taxes and SS. Since most illegal immigrants come to the US to better the lives of their family’s in Mexico, not allowing the wiring of money from the US to Mexico would stop illegal immigration in a heartbeat.

You hit the nail on the head. As far as I’m concerned, every border state should deport illegals…….not back to Mexico, but to all states who bad mouth Arizona’s decision and/or keep mouthing off about boycotting Arizona. Let those states pay more in taxes to feed and clothe, to provide medical care and shelter (and in many cases, room and board at the city, county and state detention centers), and pay more taxes to pay for additional security while they themselves sit in gated communities feeling like they are safe.
My own state (NM) and it’s worthless “leader” Bill Richardson is doing squat (IMO) to help the situation. I’m so excited….can’t wait for another “lightning” tax to go into affect…to pay for the illegals to detour to NM (even more now). What an absolute crock many elected officials seem to have aspired to be (maybe conspired is a better choice of words).
Before anyone gets the idea, I’m only anti-Mexican illegals….get a clue…..it makes no difference which direction illegals come from…if they are not a U.S. citizen….we should give them 2 relocation choices….back to their native country or other county they have “legal” citizenship in….or to any U.S. state not supporting AZ’s right to protect it’s own citizens.

I don’t care if all they bring is a good work ethic NO skill set whatsoever. I am in IT, and I can show someone who is willing how to put RAM in a motherboard, load Windows, and even some rudimentary troubleshooting. And lets not forget all the migrant workers who do manual labor on farms, etc. What I do want is LEGAL immigration. Not illegal. Enforce the law. If it is flawed, fix it. But first, you must enforce the law or we are no longer a nation of laws. And as much as we treasure freedom, freedom is found by obeying God’s Laws. Man’s laws are usually imitations of Natural Law but we do need them, and we need them enforced. Maybe someday we’ll get our laws into perfect harmony with Natural Law, but we sure seem determined to go in the opposite direction, from a state of laws and freedom to a state of anarchy and tyrrany.
Freedom is found in following God’s law? I’m sorry, but freedom is found in freedom. It is protected by reason, and objective law. It is not “bestowed” upon the chosen ones of any nation. We had a large degree of freedom due to the MEN who founded this country in the ripeness of the Enlightenment. Political scientists in the truest sense.

If I recall correctly, in 2006 the Democrats took over Washington and Bush was over ruled on every thing. They tied his hands and called the shots. That tax break he gave to every one was to help boost a sagging economy that was starting to go south be fore Bush got into office. Any one in the home building business started to feel it coming. An attack on the towers escalated what had already been started in 1993 at the same site. Don’t blame Bush for all of it. Going back further, the no new taxes Bush was also held hostage by the Dems when they forced a pork barrel laden insert to a request for money for the troops. I also currently feel that they are padding a terrible budget with the expectation that the Repubs will inherit and fall flat on its face doing so. This mess has long been calculated and one does not need a fortune teller to reveal that there are to be no fortunes as the feds have their plans for it.

Why shouldn’t they be? You are hostile to “ownership” issues. You would like it if you decided your gardener wasn’t doing the job, so you let him go and then the next day you find a picket line harassing you and any new potential gardeners that would do the job? Unions use force and coercion to extort the owners of the companies and any other potential workers who would do the job better and cheaper. Are those workers not human? Do they not deserve a job?
Of course the Democrats would ignore this lack of morality. They also ignore that it is somebody else’s money they help themselves to when they redistribute the wealth.

And almost every GOP president, the democratic congress handcuffed them and did their all to screw things up, to do what they do best, point the finger and place blame. However, Ronald Reagan outsmarted them and made things work. George Bush outsmarted them and made things work, until the last year and a half when every business in the country knew the usurper was coming, and shut down some to save money for the tax monster in waiting. Its all true. Bill Clinton sold us to China and Mexico, and cut our military and intelligence in half and left us vulnerable, thus causing 9-11 and the bank collapse. But I guess you forgot about that. Carter formed the Dept. of Energy, you know, to get us off foreign oil, only all these years later, we use more now than we ever did, and there are some 280,000 people employed by this government agency, with another couple hundred thousand being contracted by them. Yes, we are all paying for that democrat thing also. Now Obama the usurper, wants NASA to develop muslim relations, he gives lawyers to muslim terrorists caught trying to kill us. He imprisons our own soldiers for fighting to keep us safe. He sues Arizona to keep the border open so more muslims and other illegal aliens can enter the country to do their harry carry acts. He lets oil run all over the gulf, while doing nothing but hampering the clean up efforts, then blames Bush for it, when everyone knows that well didnt even start drilling until Feb. 2010, well over a year after Bush was gone. It was on his watch, and he was sleeping. They havent a clue. They just do what the old liberal matra does, and that is pull up the soap box, climb up on it, and point fingers and place blame, but offer nothing at all to make things better. Its always someone else’s fault, but God forbid they try to be the solution, and instead are a big source of the problem.

Deficits..talk to the GOP, that’s what they’ve given us. Wrecked economy…I will again refer you to the GOP who wrecked it. higher taxes…once again, ask your GOPer about why they screwed us (facts are facts..do the numbers on all taxes added up…skyrocketed under the GOP), two unfunded wars, wealthy get subsidized, and our energy policy is oil dependent and we have to suck up to the Mid East (remember them, the guys Bush kissed in subservience …which is different than a diplomatic bow).

We’ll see how well government-run healthcare works in this country pretty soon. If other government programs are any example, we’ll find that our healthcare is going to be poor quality and/or poor availability and/or too expensive. The government isn’t equipped to design or manage an efficiently run operation like healthcare. Unfortunately, now that we’ve taken this step, we can’t just back up or change directions easily. When you don’t like your insurance program, you can change, but when you don’t like a government-run program, you’re pretty much stuck with it. Thank you very much!

And if you had been stopped for speeding, how likely is it that your immigration status would have been questioned? Andrea, that’s not exactly the case. They gain citizenship if they were born in the US to parents legally in the United States. But, it has never been ruled by the Supreme Court whether that also applies to children born in the US to parents illegally in the United States:

You are right about the making money and going back part my friend. I worked a summer season in the laborers union here, doing seeding and sodding some 18 years ago. I was the only American, leading a crew of mexican guys, that I found out were all illegal aliens. Their goal was to work here a couple of seasons, take home 15 to 20 thousand dollars, and they would be a rich man there. They could buy acres of land with tons of cattle for 5 thousand bucks, and be wealthy the rest of their days. Now now it is that they can be legally employed, and make good money like that, and not have to pay social security taxes and stuff, I dont know how that works. But I do know this, it still goes on to this day, nationwide, and the unions totally support it.

One of the points I got out of this article was that our government bureaucracies are screwed up. That’s not new news. Most government bureaucracies are screwed up. That’s what needs to be cleaned up. Not a general disregard of our immigration laws to fix this problem.
You obviously didn’t read the article. He took the legal route to try to remedy his situation. In the end he was advised to simply sit and wait. If enforcement had come, he would have paid the price. I didn’t say it was okay. I simply said that is what happened.
Was it right? No. Still I choose to stay with my father who lived alone and had cancer. I also choose to stay because I was given that advice by my lawyer, an officer of the court who told me that because the U.S. State Department recognized my father’s citizenship but not the INS, I had in his opinion the right to legal status. That opinion was later backed up by a federal court.
As for how I raise my children, I hope I have encouraged them to love their parents the way I loved mine.

Don’t you know that just because a lawyer or some other government official tells you that you are breaking the law, that isn’t the final word? That is what courts are for. John, i totally understand your predicament. I came here back in 1977 from Canada on a student visa (for 3 years approved) during that time married an american, had a child. We started the paperwork for permanent LEGAL alien status, and it took over 2 years. YEs, my visa ran out, i was here illegally for 6 months and scared to death. But my choices were to leave my husband and maybe my infant and go back to Canada and WAIT till the government got its act together, or stay illegally until the paperwork got sorted out. I stayed. Im not proud of it, but I chose to stay with my family. The difference is I was here legally, trying to do things the right way. Coming here illegally, by sneaking over the border and expecting to be accepted because they made it here? NO.

Here here. I applaud Governor Brewer and Arizona’s attempt to without the law that the federal government has put aside for far too long. Even now, they dont want to enforce it even when it is such a big and expensive and violent problem. To try to fight Arizona’s attempt to enforce the law, shows the anti-Americanism that is evident in this current administration. And in fairness, Im pissed that John McCain has had all these years in Arizona and he hasnt done anything about it. He should have been championing this long ago.

As I read this I see “Our People” already here when the White man came as a statement that would be spoken by a person of Indian decent. In Missouri, you have to present a State issued Birth Certificate (not a hospital birth certificate) to renew or get a drivers license. Maybe this should be done in every state. Check out your state and start calling your legistators.

I will be happy to carry my legal status papers when traveling to Arizona and any American citizen would. However you need to read the actual document that Arizona wants to enact. You will only need to worry if you are here illegally. One more item, you need to show your birth certificate,SSI, and other documentation when renewing your drivers license, see a doctor or apply for any government services. I hope this helps; as you need to be informed and if you don’t think Obama wants to seek amnesty to illegals, so he can stay in power and overwhelm the system and have a socialistic society; then I have a beautiful bridge in California for sale; very cheap. Your right, but so are the employers. It is illegal to hire undocumented workers and yet businesses all over the country are breaking the law to save a buck! We aren’t saying that it’s ok to sneak across the border, but we are pointing out the hypocrisy of those, like you who want to enforce only one set of laws!
We, as citizens of the U.S.A. have a responsibility to uphold our laws. That is the basic argument behind Arizona’s new law. If you support the law, then why would you question the assertion that any employer who knowingly hires an illegal should be held responsible for their actions? Why is it that the corporations are supposed to have the same rights as citizens, but should not be held to the same standards that you and I must live by? If you want to stop the flow of people entering the country illegally you will need to remove the incentives. Building a wall to make it more difficult while taking away medical care and welfare will not be enough.
As long as you can come to this country and find work without legal status, people will come. And as long as we allow employers to get away with hiring illegal workers as a way of reducing the cost of doing business, they will keep hiring. This has nothing to do with hating corporations or small business. This is not about making business leaders suffer for earning more than the average Joe. This is about what is right. This is about a reasoned and logical approach to a big problem. If the guest worker program had been enforced, if businesses had felt it was too risky to hire laborers without cards and workers knew there were no jobs for those without cards, then we would be in a much better place by now.

The main reason they don’t want to learn English when they come here is that they have no real intention of staying. They want to earn some sum (usually $100,000) and then go back home. Really, 85%? The percentage of Americans who say they have “conservative political views”-40%. Republican-28%, Gun owners-40%, Christian -78%. Now consider the number of respondents who are not actually practicing Christians (let alone “Bible thumping”,) are conservative Dems and don’t object to gun regulations and your 85% or more looks pretty overblown. In fact, your whole post is rather overblown.
But not all gun owners are also conservative. And not all “Bible thumpers” are conservative either – or are all gun owners.
When you combine all people who fit at least one category, you are getting up there close to 85% – if not over.

Doesn’t this article prove just the opposite–that if police were enforcing the law in the 1980s, John Myers would have left his sick father, maybe even his citizen son, and gone back to Canada? And of course, the truth of the Arizona law is that no one who stops a John Myers (unless he happens to be very dark skinned and talks with an accent, and I don’t mean a Canadian one) is going to be asked for their papers. The point is not the goodness or badness of this law, the point is the enforcement. When it is believed that 99% of the illegal aliens in your state are brown-skinned latinos, you will stop brown skinned people. The burden of proof will be on individuals to prove they are here illegally, not law enforcement proving they aren’t. People will be brought to detainee centers, not jails, with no access to lawyers, family, etc. We need immigration laws that are compliant with the Constitution, which is still the law of the land, a law that guarantees every resident the protections of the Bill of Rights.

Yes, the law states that race alone can not be used as a determining factor, but do you really believe that race will be ignored? As for the argument that this law only applies when the police have a legitimate, legal reason to detain, that’s not saying much. How many people stop for 3 seconds before making a right turn on a red light? How often do drivers hit that yellow light just a little late? Driving too fast or too slow for the flow of traffic, lane change issues, the list goes on and on. Police choose to ignore minor offenses all the time, but now they will serve as a reason to detain a dark skinned driver if the officer wants to check their status. And if the driver is carrying an out of state license, look out? He’s hispanic and the license comes from “one of those states”.
What if the individual is not in a car? Loitering or suspicious behavior. Jay walking or appearing too young to have that beer. Again, the list goes on and on. To deny that there will be racial profiling is disingenuous at best.
The only good thing about this law is that it also requires clamping down on employers who knowingly hire illegals. If this law is upheld, I’ll be interested to see how much attention is given to this problem. How many employers will be convicted because they “encourage or induce an alien to come to or reside in the state”? On the other hand, the law requires that the individual be prosecuted to the fullest extent, but gives the judge sway to impose what he/she feels is an appropriate penalty for the employer. Well that’s only fair, right? You don’t want to be too harsh on the American businessman for putting his best interest before his country’s.
It isn’t too hard to tell which drivers are illegal in my area. They all drive about 10 miles under the speed limit, etc. to make sure they don’t get stopped for some traffic violation. And if they are involved in a wreck that does’t injure them too badly they will leave the scene. Even if they have to abandon their car.
I would have to bring race into this. If youve got illegal aliens coming in through the Mexico/Arizona border, what color do you purport their skin to be? Thats why I have no problem with profiling. Just like after 9-11. We know those that want to kill us are from the middle east. Why strip search an 85 year old black gradma, or a 45 year old white guy. Please read the law. It’s only about 10 – 15 pages (depending on font size). If your doing nothing wrong then you won’t be asked for your ID. It’s only during lawful contact that they are to check your status and if you have a valid ID that’s as far as it goes. There is already federal systems in place for inquiring about citizenship status; the AZ law simply requires that, in the course of lawful contact, the police check with the federal government for citizenship status if the person doesn’t have his ID with him/her.
And if the are caught doing illegal deeds, your darn right they should be checked to see if they belong here. No one should have a problem with that.
You are obliterating the Constitution; Citizens of the United States are covered under the Bill of Rights, the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence. Someone “residing” in the United States should not be covered under the rights afforded Citizens. I worked narcotics for 25 years at the state level, believe me when I say that we often charged offenders under the federal statutes rather than state statutes because the sentencing was much stiffer. A precedent has long been set in locals and state agent enforcing federal laws.

While I will agree we are somewhat spoiled in the US – you appear to be forgetting the International language is currently English – at one time it was French (when I was a young girl) – so in many parts of the world you will find two languages but it is not the native language and Spanish, it’s the native language and the current International Language – English. Had that not changed decades ago, the language of the country would be used as well as French. Perhaps the Mexican version of Spanish will someday be the accepted International Language, it is not currently such.

Notice the judgement declaring the National Day of Prayer as unconstitutional. The law is the law. What makes me mad is that it seems that only people that have to follow the law are the American Citizens, the people who are here legally with visas and green cards. Some people complain about people having to carry documents well where I am at in the country I have to have some form of ID on me at all times when in public. If I get pulled over for any reason I get asked for licence registration and proof of insurence. What’s the problem with carrying id? All legal citizens in the US should always carry some form of id with them and if a officer of the law asks to see it, if you have nothing to hide, then show them! Not so tough or inconvenient. Hell, no one has a problem showing id numerous times at the airport. It pisses me off that people automatically pull out the race card on issues like this. I spent 30 years in the military and find it rather simple minded that people consider having to show law enforcement your papers is offensive. The current federal immigration law allows for anyone’s papers to be checked to determine citizenship without a person breaking any law. This practice continues to be performed in Europe, Asia and all other parts of the civilized world. So get your liberal heads out of your lower anatomy and think like a responsible citizen who believes in protecting your country’s borders and sovereignty like most other countries do. I am proud to call myself a liberal on the basis of Environmental Protection, Progressive Taxation, Universal Health Care, Clean Energy, and other such issues which Democrats champion. However, I am squarely in the camp of cutting off not only illegal immigration but legal as well. The reason for this is the fact that all these Liberal causes cannot possibly be addressed with an out of control flood of poor humanity into this country. The overriding problem to be solved is population growth. The notion of growing the economy with cheap labor to solve our problems is like standing on the accelerator as we head for a cliff.
We need to shrink both the economy and the population to fit the capacity of the earth to sustain us into the future. Liberals need to understand that you cannot solve the problems of the third world by importing the third world’s excess population. Those problems must be solved by supporting birth control in those countries. Conservatives must understand that their objections to birth control are the main cause of environmental degradation and mass immigration to America.

No where in the Bible (the Christian Holy Word) does God say that when we reach xxx,xxx,xxx,xxx, people we need to stop. The Holy words say to “go forth and multiply”. So this is not an issue of numbers but an issue of “greed”. When we as a society feel intitled to BIG everything it is gained at the expense of the environment.
Many of the excesses that are had in the west are desired in other parts of the world. We in the west are not teaching anything other than greed. Let it be said though that “required distribution of wealth” is not the same as “giving from the Heart” so I do not agree with the “wealth distribution” policies of the current administration.
Remebering who makes and keeps us wealthy and whole is not our government but GOD alone.

It may not be stated in the Bible how many kids you should have but when you start reaching the point where more kids means less food for everyone, it is time to stop having that many kids. I think it is totally wrong for a family to have 6-15 kids they simply cannot feed even if they give up spending on all other matters. To me that is as big a case of child abuse as beating them to death. At least the beatings are quicker and can be stopped with time. Starvation can’t be.
Population would be self-stabilized in a Free Market where nobody gets to ride on unwilling shoulders. The Liberal ideals promote population growth by making it easy for the irresponsible non-workers to saddle the workers with their mistakes. And then after making it easier for the non-workers to have more babies, the Liberals want to pass laws to limit population growth caused by their own misguided policies. The common theme here? Bigger Government.
Liberals and Freedom are like oil and water.
That is one thing that annoys me about the Welfare system. They pay additional money for each child to a welfare mom (but not dad) up to eight kids. So if they want more money, just have another kid. And don’t worry about caring for the kid; the government will do that. They REFUSE to allow a welfare mom to have her tubes tied until she has at least 3 kids. I know a woman who had the third one just to get approval to have her tubes tied. And guess who has the children? Her parents.
On the other hand, if you are a hard-working person who pays taxes most families stop at 2 kids or even 1 because that’s all they can afford and still be able to provide the family with a decent living.
That is one of the reasons the government is so slow to stop illegal aliens from coming in. The working class doesn’t even have enough children to replace themselves. It’s growing smaller. So they bring in millions a year – legal and illegal – to try to make up that difference. But the real problem is that the ones they allow to enter are here primarily to go on the welfare system – which requires us workers to pay even more in taxes to pay for their costs too.
Conservatives objection to birth control??? How about objection to abortion – taking the life of an unborn child is more like the objection! Abortion is not birth control!

First, all governments on Earth depend on an expanding population to increase the amount of tax money they collect. How can you be so evil as to force them to not vote themselves pay raises because the tax collection is going down? Don’t you feel bad about it? They do.
Second, the fact that conservatives in the US, by and large, do not approve of abortion has absolutely nothing to do with the populations of other countries. In fact one of the biggest reasons for their high growth of numbers is the US help to cut down on the number of infant deaths in those countries.
I read an article in the paper once about some islands in the South Pacific. Families there expected to have about 20 kids with about three-four living to adult age. Americans felt bad about this and built hospitals, etc. to allow the kids to grow up. Twenty years later the US simply couldn’t understand why these families now had as many as 20 kids? Didn’t they know better?

When your having heart palpitations, and you go in, and they have you sign in and tell you to come back in three weeks, then go home and die and tell me its good then. When your taxes go up 30 percent to pay for it, tell me its good then. When you need a breathing treatment because your an asthmatic, and they cant see you for a week, your a dead man. Tell me its good then. And yes, this is how it works. And those who work pay more to give it to those who dont work. When someone is getting something free, someone is paying somewhere, and it always seems like its me that keeps on paying. Ill have to decline at this time, thank you just the same.
John, you said that “U.S. News & World Report says there may be method to the Federal government’s madness,” but I missed what “method” they might have outside of the hint at NOT improving the economy. Did I miss it, or did you forget to tell us? I have a hard time believing that US News & World Report would criticise the Obama Administration.
Otherwise, great article; I think you put the problem in proper perspective, especially the “effeciveness” and “efficiency” of two government agencies that didn’t bother to communicate, thus causing your problem to last for years and years.

HEY 45, are you sure about this? I never heard that absentee ballots are not counted?
It was brought up in one of the contended elections. Franks maybe. The election offical brought up counting the absentee votes. Some reporter immediately wanted to know why they weren’t already counted.
The reply was that there weren’t that many absentee votes. If one candidate won by a hundred thousand votes, it wasn’t worth the time involved to open and count a couple of thousand absentee votes. Even if every vote whet to the loser, he’d still lose. But in a close vote of a couple of hundred different, the absentee votes could make a difference. So it was worth the time then to count them.

Terrorists are a threat to the United States. Terrorist countries are using Arizona as a pathway to other states (Yemen, Syria, etc.). Arizona has been invaded by 500,000 illegals. We must identify them. This is a security issue, not civil rights as depicted by Obama, Al Sharpton, Andy Stern, and the INJUSTICE Dept. Not protecting Americans from the invasion of illegals is an impeachable offense. Obama has put up signs in southern Arizona, “Danger, illegal aliens, drug dealers…do not enter this land.”
Obama, that land is Federal land, but it is the land of the American people. You are allowing illegal criminals to take over our land. We own that land as much as we own you, President Obama. President Calderon of Mexico and several other Latino countries have signed on to protest the AZ law. Obama, this is collusion on your part with foreign nations, putting them before American citizens. Governor Jan Brewer is protecting us.
Obama, you seek a way to get Latino votes by making illegals…legal. Andy Stern of SEIU wants to unionize them. Al Sharpton wants a march for civil rights. LaRaza wants a revolution to take back their land. ENOUGH is ENOUGH.

All good thoughts however, let’s be clear. The US needs to protect it’s borders and the third world countries need to address their own birth control issues…NOT the US. What exactly does your statement “Conservatives must understand that their objections to birth control are the main cause of environmental degradation and mass immigration to America”. What does this mean??? So, conservative views on birth control here in our country is the main cause for illegals to flock to America???? What a bunch of horse poop! The US Gov’t & the US citizens make decisions for the good of our country and shouldn’t worry about what another country thinks of those decisions. Oh…but wait…I forgot…in “The Chosen One’s” America, it doesn’t matter what we citizens think. That’s been made quite clear in the last 18 mos or so with the stimulus’, bank bailouts, auto maker bailouts, health care, etc. I wonder how long this list of “accomplishments” will be by the time this socialist, ego maniac leaves office which won’t be soon enough for me!
