The Senate’s Christmas Gift

Senate Democrats are working overtime to get an Obamacare bill passed before Christmas. They no longer even pretend to be doing it to reform healthcare. Now they’re just doing whatever it takes to get a bill passed, even if it costs somewhere between $848 billion and $2.1 trillion, depending on which math you use.
Never mind that the Realclearpolitics.com average of polls shows that Americans oppose the Democrat’s healthcare bill by a 54.2 percent to 39.7 percent margin. Democrats have gone all in, as the saying goes, and nothing is going to stop them.
As an unnamed Democratic strategist told Byron York of The Washington Examiner, “Once you’ve gone this far, what is the cost of failure?”
Comparing Democrats to bank robbers—how appropriate—who have gone past the point of no return, the strategist said, “They’re in the bank, they’ve got their guns out. They can run outside with no money, or they can stick it out, go through the gunfight, and get away with the money.”
Of course, money is what it’s all about. Not saving it mind you, but stealing yours.
Sen. Dick Durbin (D.-Ill.) told The Hill that Democrats will have the 60 votes needed to pass a bill this week. They’re buying off reluctant Democrats left and right.
For Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu the price was $300 million in federal aid to her state. As columnist Charles Krauthammer said on Fox News, if Landrieu got $300 million, Sen. Ben Nelson (D.-Neb.)—said to be holding out for removal of a provision in the bill that allows federal funding to pay for abortions—gets a Caribbean island, or two. Or, if some news reports are correct, a threat to close a military base in his state if he doesn’t join in.
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I.-Conn.) is back on board. We don’t yet know what he got in return, aside from a lot of face time on television. In an effort to get one or more Republicans to sign on so the bill can be cast as bi-partisan, Maine Republican Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe are being courted as well. Look for Maine to get a bundle of cash for snow plows or something.
Meanwhile, Joe and Jane Citizen only get dunned. If you are a family with an annual income above $88,200 and your employer doesn’t provide coverage, prepare to fork out $15,200 a year for a federally-mandated insurance fee, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) as reported by CNSNews.com. And few employers are going to provide coverage for their employees once the plan kicks in.
Why? There is an incentive not to. If employers don’t pay their share of their employees’ premiums they’ll have to pay $750 per employee fine. That’s much less than the employer contribution on a complete health plan.
What’s more, there are tax increases in the bill. Lots of them. According to the Heritage Foundation, Medicare taxes increase from 2.9 percent to 3.4 percent, the top marginal tax rate goes from 35 percent to 39.6 percent and, in the House version of the bill, a surtax of 5.4 percent is put on incomes above $500,000.
Following is a list from the Heritage Foundation of other tax increases currently in either the House or Senate bill or proposed by the Barack Obama administration to “pay” for healthcare reform:
- An excise tax on high-cost "Cadillac" health insurance plans that cost more than $8,500 a year for individuals or $23,000 for families.
- An excise tax on medical devices such as wheelchairs, breast pumps and syringes used by diabetics for insulin injections.
- A cap on the exclusion of employer-provided health insurance without offsetting tax cuts.
- A limit on itemized deductions for taxpayers with a top income tax rate greater than 28 percent.
- A windfall profits tax on health insurance companies.
- A value-added tax, which would tax the value added to a product at each stage of production.
- An excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages including non-diet soda and sports drinks.
- Higher taxes on alcoholic beverages including beer, wine and spirits.
- A limit on contributions to health savings accounts.
- An 8 percent tax on all wages paid by employers that do not provide their employees health insurance that satisfies the requirements defined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
- A limit on contributions to flexible spending arrangements.
- Elimination of the deduction for expenses associated with Medicare Part D subsidies.
- An increase in taxes on international businesses.
- Elimination of the tax credits paper companies take for biofuels they create in their production process—the so-called “Black Liquor credit.”
- Fees on insured and self-insured health plans.
- A limit or repeal of the itemized deduction for medical expenses.
- A limit on the Qualified Medical Expense definition.
- An increase in the payroll taxes on students.
- An extension of the Medicare payroll tax to all state and local government employees.
- An increase in taxes on hospitals.
- An increase in the estate tax.
- Increased efforts to close the mythical “tax gap.”
- A 5 percent tax on cosmetic surgery and similar procedures such as Botox treatments, tummy tucks and face lifts.
- A tax on drug companies.
- An increase in the corporate tax on providers of health insurance.
- A $500,000 deduction limitation for the compensation paid by health insurance companies to their officers, employees and directors.
And the kicker is the taxes go into effect immediately after Obama signs the bill. The healthcare benefits don’t start until 2014.
All the taxes are designed to confiscate the wealth of Mr. and Mrs. Citizen and drive them into a public option—even as Senate Democrats say the bill doesn’t include one, yet.
On Dec. 16 the president went on television and said if Congress doesn’t pass a healthcare bill the Federal government will go bankrupt. Poppycock. If a healthcare bill is passed it’s Mr. and Mrs. Citizen that go belly up.
The spend-and-tax policies of Obama and the Democrats—stimulus bills, TARP bill, healthcare bill, etc.—are what is pushing us toward economic collapse.
Face it. The healthcare reform plan Democrats are ramming through is nothing more than the greatest transfer of wealth and most massive power grab in the history of the world.
Frankly, I don’t consider that much of a Christmas present.

I am not so concerned about the Democrats getting their just dues as the morons who voted for them in the first place. Devils in disguise have been misleading people for centuries. You would think that people would learn. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see the Democrats hold their own in the future. Americans fell for the crap last time, what makes you think they won’t fall for the next load? Obama has a few months to pull something off to impress his supporters. That’s all it will take to suck them all back in again. A little hokus pokus and they won’t see it coming again….until it’s too late. But we can still hope and pray that we won’t get fooled again. Hey, isn’t that an old rock song? People never learn. But then, maybe the Obama supporters won’t get their just dues after all. I bet the tax increases will not affect the high income Democrats. There will probably be a special deduction for everyone who voted Democrat in the last election. The senators all got paid off. Why not the rest of the Obama supporters? It’s in his plan somewhere. Count on it.
The Democrats in washington are evil people to play along in Abominable Obama’s games to harm the American people for his own pleasures. WE are the people of this great land, the Promised Land of freedom, where we have freedom of speach and to worship our God as we will. We will no longer be free to do much of anything as we were free only a few months ago if this health bill goes through. Any thing Obama tries to do will make a dictatorship of this land of ours. I can say this much, we will be told what to do, how to do it and when to do what ever he commands us to do. We will be at his pleasures and at his command. Our families will be destroyed. He wants to do anything he can to us. If the health care bill goes through this is what it will be like, and we will be living in fear!

Livingston says that the point of what the Dems are doing in congress is to steal your money…So simplistic and wrong. If spending money we don’t have was the answer, then there would be no poor countries and no poor people.
Money is an abstract representation of a person’s labor. If excess money is created, then that person’s money becomes necessarily worth less (more money chasing fewer goods). It’s all about productivity. What makes people work hard? If they work and save and then an errant government spends wildly with money it doesn’t have, their savings become worth less. Do you think that will make them work harder? Hardly.
All the money in the world is meaningless if nothing is being produced. You would know that if you weren’t purposely ignorant.

That money would have paid for life insurance for your uninsured citizens several times over.Canada has not gone bankrupt and our citizens are wealthier and healthlier per capita then the average American. A healthy nation requires less medical care and more affordable . In some area our system can be overburden because it is FREE. People go to the Emergeny Dept. with a cold or a headache. By law, they cannot be turned away and must be seen by a physician. We partly pay for our Health care by heavily taxing the principal causes of bad health such as booze, cigarettes and large contributions from gambling casinos. I have lived under the Nazis and Communists, and believe you me, who abolished freedom or any civil rights and practiced murder of millions of people most of them for no reason at all. How many of those people would have died anyway, even if they did not get the flu? I dont recall the republicans doing much for health care reform either . This bill does nothing for lowering costs , which have gotten way out of line . But it certianly is better than nothing , as it should stop the bankruptcy cuased by the medical industry . which insidently is our biggest cause of bankruptcy . not over spending or unqulified loans .

My insurance has no preexisting clause and no lifetime limit. I can see any Dr. I wish and a specialist without a precert and as soon as the man or woman has an opening. I have to disagree. I work, and my insurance worked just fine for me and my family. I paid my premiums, and never have to worry about nothing, but those days are gone now. One of the best ways to stop these creeps is to stop Pork Barrel Spending! How? We have to get as many conservatives on board as possible to craft a bill that says if your state receives more compensation than the other states whether its in the original bill or is an Ear Mark then your Senators and Congressmen cannot vote yes to the bill but it will be recorded as an automatic No Vote for your state. If the bill fails to pass on the first vote then half of the ear marks ( the most expensive) have to be taken out of the bill, then if it still fails to pass All of the Ear Marks must be taken out of the bill. If the bill still fails to pass then it is to be sent back to committee for further study and changes and must wait at least a year before it can be voted on again! If a state has an emergency and need money or special help then the other states can pass the bill without the vote of the beneficial states vote. Something of this nature has to be passed and I believe the majority of Americans will support this idea. Once you turn off their money machine you can start eliminating these perverse Liberals who wish to usurp the constitution and openly steal from us the way they have been doing for many years now. Let everybody who agrees with me contact their state representatives and start crafting such a bill as soon as possible. I have a clue about the founding documents. Some of it is brilliant and far thinking and the rest is BS. Remember the clause of our Constitution that counted Blacks as a fraction of a human being? That was racist and ignorant! It evidences that the founders were imperfect MEN of their time. Nonetheless, the imperfect, slave holding, founders had the far sightedness to understand that they had to be corrected periodically also. That why we have the amendment process and the mechanisms to pass new legislation. We’ll keep perfecting their original concept until we get it right. Happy Holidays!

Sorry Robin, universal healthcare works just fine here in Canada. If you don’t like it that’s cool, but I like the fact that I don’t have to spend my entire life savings on a loved one who unexpectedly ended up in at a hospital. I’ve heard too many stories about hard working Americans whose life savings were wiped out by unexpected health emergencies and felt thankful that I live in Canada. (Don’t get me wrong, I love visiting the US, with my travel insurance.) I hope you guys get this sorted out, but don’t denigrate the Canadian healthcare system, it works very well and we like it just the way it is.
I talked with a Canadian who was a banker. A medical outfit wanted to get a loan to build a private for-profit clinic that would offer better health care then the public clinics. The Canadian Liberals were fighting that action, because it wouldn’t be “fair” to those regular citizens who couldn’t afford such good care. Ahh, the politics of envy. What would we do without jealous citizens? I mean besides having better economies.

This care is for all with a minimum charge (some provinces have quarterly bills eg; approx $40 per Mo. single coverage $140 family)Many companies offer supplimental coverage with employee plans.DaveH many Provinces have private clinics that anyone who wants faster (better?) service can buy (eg; $3000 per year per family plus treatment costs. The Socialized care that many of you are so panicked about comes with a hefty price tag with huge deficits being incurred by some Provinces. I think I would prefer to be taken care of by that system rather than have to go untreated or have to take out a second mortgage or even sell your home for a major health treatment as is common in the US.

The difference here, Rod, is whether or not anybody has a right to ride on anybody else’s unwilling shoulders. There is little that is “free” in life. Those products that are given to the citizens by government are paid for by somebody else (unwillingly usually). That is theft, plain and simple. And even if not for the immorality of it, the costs will inevitably escalate beyond those of a free-market system. The more bureaucrats you throw into a person’s health-care decisions, the more the expenses go up or the rationing increases.
If health care is a right, then surely food and shelter are also. The lack of food or proper shelter will lead to death far more often than the lack of good healthcare. So, the inevitable next step is Marxism which has failed miserably everywhere it has been fully implemented.

The only way that we will ever stop this insanity and usurpation of power is on the local level.We as a people need to stop worrying about what the National government is doing and start worrying about local government is doing. We need to start electing Constitutional leaders locally and on the state levels that will stand up to the Federal government and say “we do not agree and reject your laws within our state”.We need to elect people that will stand up for the Constitution and our 10th Amendment Rights to govern our own affairs, without federal interference. We need to stop funding the Federals and have our states issue their own Constitutionally mandated money (Article 1 Section 8). We need to have Govenors that will authorize Constitutional state militias (2nd Amendment)that answer to the Govenor of the state and not the Federal government. A good place to start would be a Sheriff that upholds the Constitution. IF you want change…start on the local level….it does not matter what the Federal government implements…if the states will not enforce it.
Everything starts at home and moves outwardly..small ideas can become enormous ideas…start at the botom and work up..not from the top and work down.

The bill, as approved by the Senate (all 60%), is less than great to be sure. But it’s very generous to the “free enterprize” insurance companys. That should make you very happy. The question that I have is where were the Republicans. I didn’t hear one constructive idea from them. Their plan was to act like a bunch of middle school flunky’s. Name calling, distortions, and diversions aren’t the way a democracy works. I think they will also pay a price in 2010 and 2012.

Get ready to start footing 100% of your own bill (which goes up every year) and get ready for the Bush tax cuts AND these new taxes to hit your income simultaneously.

If you are on your parents insurance then you will be covered by the government option if they get temporarily laid off so then you don’t have the choice they have now!!!
If you, as an employee, gets laid off say for three months, just long enough to lose your coverage, you HAVE to go on the government option and then you can never leave!!!! This equals no new customers for the insurance companies!!! This means a new bunch of unemployed people!!! Let me see here…..police and firemen work for local, county and state municipalities…not the Federal Governmnet.If they are unhappy with their health care insuance, they can 1) change insurance companies, 2) they move can somewhere that has what they are looking for. However, when the Federal Government “mandates” for the entire nation….moving makes no difference, nor can they shop around for another policy that meets their reqirments. If they decide to raise the price 100% every year, you have to have it…you have to pay it…take a look at auto insurance prices since it has been made mandatory by the states…absolutely out of control, buy a new car nowadays and your insurance payments are almost as high as your car payment! Why?…because it is mandatory.

The government program I worked under in the school system also went broke. I’m not sure if it’s even still in existence as I’m retired. All I know is, the schools hired less people who worked in the program every year and fewer children were able to be helped. Would you say rationed help?

Why do you think so many of our troops are scattered all over the globe?….because when those foreign troops do arrive to quell the American uprising…the only ones to protect us…is ourselves. Our troops will be thousands of miles away and unable to render assistance to the American people. Those foreign troops will have no qualms at all about shooting us on sight if the order is given. If you think the health care system isn’t about health, then you must be in good health or you wouldn’t say that. I have been fighting cancer now for over 12 years and have nothing but concerned doctors the whole time. It’s only due to them that I am still here and in relatively good health for my 75 years. If you think doctors are in it for the money, you don’t know how long it takes before they actually earn a fairly good living. It takes years, lots of them. I could tell you why, but that would be another long page here.

Imagine my shock and horror when I applied for “Residency” and their immigration department told me: “Pensioners like yourself CANNOT RETIRE IN AUSTRALIA without posting a $250,000. “Medical Insurance Bond” with the government so that if and when you need major medical treatment (e.g. hip replacement, Cancer therapy, etc.) we’ll simply take those costs from the bond you posted when you came here instead of our government paying for your treatments!”
Stunned and almost disbelieving at what I’d just been told, I said: “Oh my God! I wish MY Country had passed the same law 50 years ago!” The officer smiled as she leaned toward me and whispered: “WE SAW YOUR MISTAKE sweetie, and decided: we ain’t doin’ that!”
Needless-to-say, I was sickened, disappointed and dejected that “my HOPES of living peacefully somewhere else” had been turned away; I had no choice but to return to the US.
I checked with England immigration in 2008, and that country requires a “guaranteed yearly income” of £37,000. (roughly $61,050.) from Pensioners/Retirees in order to live there, even if you have a relative (son/daughter) you’d live with!
If you’re a “normal” Senior with less than $50,000. a year income like I am, finding another country to live in WON’T be easy, if you find one at all!

What if all Americans changed their tax exemptions so we all pay the least amount per check, then when tax time comes around for 2010, no one pays the difference between what they paid during the year( a reduced amount due to changing withholdings)and what their taxes say they owe? An ALL American boycott of the government. Do you think that might get their attention?! I saw the Libertarians stance on religion, which made it sound like it is neutral on it, which means to me its ok, that they wouldnt interfere in someones right to worship Jesus Christ, which it seems the current government is starting to do. My question is, if you know the answer which I didnt see in there anywhere, is would the Libertarians take away the tax free status of the church? If so , that would be a terrible thing for the church, and downright destructive. I believe that most of the money that comes into a church comes from its participants, and the government should not be able to tax that money, at all. However, I also believe that waiters and waitresses make tips on volutary giving of individuals, and the government should have no right to tax that money either, but they do. But before I would vote this way, I would need to know if they were going to attack the church in this way, and if they would, I couldnt support them. I will be researching this and looking for answers, but I thought Id ask you, because you promote them quite often, and you come across to me as quite an intelligent person, so let me know if your up on this aspect of the Libertarians. This chapter in our history is absolutely shameful. If you want to effect real change the only hope is for a third party. Anyone running as a Dem/Rep cannot restore sanity to this out of control mess. As freshman senator/congress creatures they will fall right in line regardless of campaign platform or hype. Third party candidates are the only hope. They will be ostracized and ineffective as far as generating meaningful legislation until they can gain numbers in both houses. So it will take 2-3 election terms to make significant impact.

Raggs, Absolutely correct! For anyone who still thinks their vote counts, you might try watching the HBO award winning documentary “Hacking Demacracy”. Even after proving how easy it is to hack into the system and alter votes here in Florida after the 2000 debacle…we in Florida are still using computer voting…which is still un-verifiable.The only way to make sure your vote is counted is to have all voting on paper ballots,place in a box in full public veiw at all times and counted 3 times (in full public view), once by a Dem. once by a Repub. and once by a Independent to asure that there is no fraud in the vote count. Nothing else will ever insure that our vote actually counts.
