Sneaky Senate Trying To Slip Internet Kill Switch Past Us

Sensing Senators don’t have the stomach to try and pass a stand-alone bill in broad daylight that would give the President the power to shut down the Internet in a national emergency, the Senate is considering attaching the Internet Kill Switch bill as a rider to other legislation that would have bi-partisan support.
“It’s hard to get a measure like cybersecurity legislation passed on its own,” Senator Thomas Carper (D-Del.) told GovInfoSecurity.com. Carper is chairman of the Senate subcommittee with cybersecurity oversight.
Under instructions from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) are working to combine their separate bills into one that can be attached to another piece of legislation, such as the Defense Authorization Act.
While proponents say an Internet Kill Switch is needed to protect the nation’s power, water and banking grids, what it really is is a way to control the flow of information. Experts have said that the nation’s power and water grids are not connected directly to the Internet.
Lieberman let slip his real thoughts on the Internet Kill Switch in an interview with CNN’s Candy Crowley when he said, “Right now China — the government — can disconnect parts of its Internet in a case of war. We need to have the ability to do that, too.”

And the idiot Rockefeller is no friend of the Internet either. He has said he wished the Internet had never been invented and we were back to communicating with pencil and paper.
China and other totalitarian regimes readily use their power over the Internet to deny their citizens the free flow of information. And that’s what in store for the United States if this bill comes to fruition.
The President — Democrat or Republican — can now use almost any excuse to declare a state of emergency and that would give him the excuse to shut down any and all parts of the Internet. The target of the shutdown could be sites that express dissenting views or entire sections of the country the President — or his puppet master — is displeased with.
The Senate will soon be back in Washington, D.C., for a four-week session before adjourning until the November elections. This is the window that provides the most danger to our freedom.

Actually, Rockefeller is a classic “useful idiot.” He’s not alone, and a short list includes Reid, Lieberman and the White House crew. I suppose it’s possible that some parrots and robots will step forward and claim that government can never have enough power ['trust us. we know best'].
We have nothing to lose by singling out EVERY elected official as an enemy of the American people if they dare to put restrictons on the internet. Does it have to be said that when and if the 1st Amendment dies, the 2nd Amendment will be sacrificed next in the name of safety?
Because of what is at stake, anyone who dares to support elected slime who want to tamper with the internet are no better than their “leaders.” In the 18th century, the British had to learn a hard lesson.

I used to actually believe congress and the senate voted on bills individually and argued whether they were good for the country and if they should be passed, I had no clue they didn’t even read them or attached them to other bills and sneak them through, silly me
blv54, don’t sweat it, there is a lot of us, who weren’t on board with this!___ I didn’t really get involved in fact finding until our kids left home two years ago, I was just too busy with sick parents and helping to raise a grand daughter. I really began reading, when a virtually unknown senator was getting, what I thought too much attention & publicity, about running for president. I then went on a fact finding mission, and wound up NOT voting for Obama. This “shift” I believe has been coming for a long time, it was visible, when Bush was President, why he wasn’t perfect either, Obama makes Bush look like an angel!
It seem that we all get closer by the day.With all this crap going on they think were not watch them.I feel the need for a revolution to take back what they have stolen every day.Maybe its just me but I always knew that there was corruption in politics and government but it is completly out of control!

What ever happened to “defend and protect” the constitution of the United States. Isn’t that the oath that they all take as they come to Washington. They have long since forgotten that oath and it has become almost criminal in the way they are trying to sidestep the Constitution. I am almost in agreement with Dan that some sort of revolution needs to happen. We need to significantly change the way Congress take bits of our Constitutional protections away from us. Here is a prime example. A bill that would not pass on it’s own will be slipped into the wording of another to get passed. All bills need to be brought to a vote on the merits of the Bill and not slipped into another to ensure it passes.
Oaths are binding only if the person taking them considers them so. Particularly if they are atheist – which I believe most of our Congress are.

Our solem oath seems to mean nothing today. People let them run off their lips without a thought. Oath’s, promises and a persons word, stand for nothing today. People let lies issue from their lips as though they were just breathing air. I think it is our own faults. Not that I like to say that but how many of us have taken the time to insist on our children really understanding what their oath or word or promise really is? I know I never made it a point in my child raising unless one of my kids got caught in a lie! It just didn’t Dawn on me to make it a focal point and it really should have. Now today I am working to make up for lost time. Of course my boys are full grown men now and it is easier to talk to them about integrity and honesty, and they can see what they couldn’t see when they were young. We need to learn how to look for and choose our leaders and teach our children just how very powerful their vote is and that their vote should never be just tossed on a candidate without a thorough examination of that candidate and if the beliefs of that candidate do not line up with every one of our christian beliefs then we don’t give them our vote! Our candidates need to be scrutinized and backed long before they are the final choice for a party. We have to work hard to get the right people in office. If we don’t we will always end up with people that don’t measure up and we will have to decide to either vote for someone we don’t like or just not vote and put up with someone we don’t like. My wife is a God-fearing woman who spend all her life being good and taking care of others. She told me to be sure my guns are loaded and handy in case the government tries to show up. Since Oblama came to office it is as if they feel that they no longer have to hide what they are doing. They just don’t seem to care if we know any more because they don’t believe we are now able to do anything to stop them even if we want to do it. It is called the Society for Creative Anachronisms. It is basically a medival play group. We dress up as knights and ladies and have fun. But the one thing we really do well is learn to fight with all the various weapons used in the Middle Ages. All major towns have a group and I know Phenix does. Look for sca.org. It tells you a lot about the group and how to get in contact. A knight marshal is both a safety office and a trainer. It is a very family-oriented group and we look out for each other. If you like history and would like to be a knight, look up such a group. (I had a laugh at one lady one time. She said, “I used to HATE writing term papers in school. Now I do it for fun!”)

That all depends on whether we get the chance to vote for good people and if they let us down we vote them out again in two years. This country wasn’t built in two years, four years, or even twenty, and it could take that long to get us back on our feet again, and not be the biggest borrower on the planet. We may have the most powerful military but that cannot replace having a strong economy and being out of debt. The 111th Congress has added more than 3 TRILLION dollars to our debt and even if we paid no interest on that it would take more than 2,700 years to pay that back at a million dollars a day. It’s impossible and all we can do is vote them out and get ready for food and fuel and imported goods tripling after the deflation ends and maybe before (stagflation). Even replacing Congress will not change what they have already squandered but if they can convince us it doesn’t matter and there is nothing we can do then they have already won!
A strong economy comes from a country that actually PRODUCES goods and services, not from one that just CONSUMES them.

Did you know that the securest job in the US is that of Congress? They have the smallest turnover of any other job in the US – usually less than 3% over a two year period. We need to convince them this fall that it really isn’t as secure as they thought.
I believe that we have reached the tipping point, and if we do nothing, this country is gone. This is exactly what obama wanted when he took office, I believe that the only thing for which he is waiting to complete the job, is an incident of some nature, with which he can justify declaring martial law. From then on, America will no longer exist as we knew it. In my opinion, it will then take a revolution to begin anew, and I am not sure that there are enough patriots in this country to do what is necessary. We have raised several generations of children that have no idea what freedom really means. Freedom is being responsible for oneself, not taking largess from the labors of others, you are responsilbe for your own education, housing, clothing and food. You become a productive citizen, you become self sufficient. There are those that are not capable of doing that, and for them, society may have an obligation to aide them, but that responsibility DOES NOT BELONG TO OR WITH THE GOVERNMENT. The government should be small, and pay attentiong to those things that are consigned to the government, national defense, and security of the boarders. We have for generations elected people that believe that they are smarter than the rest of us, and feel compeled to try and dictate to us how to live, how to spend what money they allow us to keep, and it is time for that to stop. They are not any smarter than society, no matter what they think. Some of them might be, but that does not give them the right to tinker in our lives.

I agree, Bob J, Obama is waiting for any reason to declare martial law at the optimal time (for him). It will probably be a contrived crisis. As for intelligence: there are equally intelligent people on all sides of an issue. Being intelligent, however, doesn’t mean the right decisions will be reached. What’s more important is the wisdom and understanding, along with the right knowledge, to make a proper decision. In Obama’s mind, he is doing what’s best for him and the rest of the world. It would be really good to see him impeached.

NO ONE WANTS A REVOLUTION! It may be necessary but we want to try everything we can to prevent it first. They know this as well as we do. Actually, I think that the revolution (if there is one) will come about when they start showing up at our doors with orders to confiscate all weapons. Many of us (at least here in Texas) will simply shoot them and go down shooting. Since I expect each such person to take at least one with them (and many times more) I suspect that those who send the men will run out before we run out of citizens. And I expect that after some of your neighbors get killed this way that you will see many of the rest simply getting together, as they did at Concord, and going to visit the local group trying to collect the guns.

I read about the military having a virus on their systems. When I read the article, I expected that our politicians would buy this as a reason to have an internet kill switch. Plus many citizens. There were a couple problems.
1. The introduction was by USB and not internet.
2. They didn’t detect it for a period and thus it was able to infect multiple systems.
#2 is actually the goal of viruses and hostile intrusions. So by the time you would activate an internet kill switch, the damage was already done. I am against an internet kill switch.
It kills freedom of information. The consequences are greater than any perceived gains. We think of a broad internet kill switch, but reality is that this sort of thing already exists. China, Iran, and many DICTATORSHIPS. This isn’t a tool for freedom. It is a tool for oppression of the citizens. So why are the people all for this? It just amazes me that the very same people who want their freedom of information also want this and the internet to become a government controlled utility (FCC reclassifying and/or mandating).

I agree with you. There may be some liberal police but not too many troops. The liberals believe it is wrong to defend our country. They believe all who would volunteer for the military to be prospective murderers who want a legal reason to kill someone. That’s the main reason they don’t trust vets. We’ve already proved we are murderers – even if we never saw a day on the front lines. Plus, they find that many liberals who do go in (at least during the days of draft) came back out changed. Most of them were now conservatives! They don’t want to risk that and discourage any child from wanting to go in.

For a third party to be truly effective it will need to start on the local level> As people are elected to local positions move up to county then state offices. Only then will you have a viable third party that can affect things on the national level with any degree of success. The problem with that is it will take time and how much time do we have? The short term solution is to vote out incumbants as long as their opposition at least appears to be better while building the power base of a third party.

My question is why do we need lawyers writing bills that no one can understand? Why can’t they write bills in layman terms so that all can understand what they are voting on. I think that “riders bills” attached to another bill should not be allowed. I have seen many times thing get passed this way without us knowing about it. Off the top of my head many years ago there was a bill to raze the postage stamps 2 cents. On that bill congress put a rider bill and gave all of the a raze in pay and it wasn’t no 2 cents raze. It was $60,000 to 100,000. I can’t remember the amount anymore but the point is this should not be allowed. All bills should be stand alone bills only. They say it save time by doing it there way. I don’t dout it does save time because the would have one hell of a time getting some of this crap passed by it’s self.

Can anyone explain WHY all the critical infrastructure computers are connected to the INTERNET? This has been a question that plagues me from the very beginning. As a computer engineer this has never made sense to me. I would never connect critical IT resources to the WWW. We already know what that has caused in the past. There are 6 billion people on this planet, and more that half of them would like to give us grief if they can get away with it.

Our so called “elected officials” serve other masters, certainly not those of us who consider ourselves patriotic Americans. In fact, with the exception of the perfunctory intercourse with constituants when not in DC, I get the impression they look upon us with comtempt. And why wouldn’t they? We don’t have high voter turn out usually so a relative few decide who and what represents us. The public schools system is a dismal failure unless dumbing down America is the goal, which they’ve accomplished brilliantly, so the average American couldn’t tell you who is next in line for the presidency if both Obama and Biden couldn’t perform for some reason. God help us if it happens because we’ll be living the Wizard of Oz story with the wicked witch from the east running the country! Most Americans couldn’t tell you the difference between the two houses of the legislature or how many branches of government we have and name them. Most Americans believe we’re a democracy when in fact we’re a republic and they couldn’t tell you what a republic actually is. On another subject: Some one mentioned a third party for the coming elections. It is too late for the November elections have any of you have heard of Wayne Root of the Libertarian Party? The ground swell for a third party is present but it would take a large effort and considerable funding to make it a reality.

I agree, but unlike the majority posting here I think it’s time for the GOP to take a sabbatical. They seem incapable of the truth and unwilling to propose any solutions.
