A Thanksgiving Lesson

Did you know that our Pilgrim forefathers tried communism when they first landed at Plymouth Rock? Keep reading to learn how the experiment in communism failed, and what William Bradford did to correct it…

New York City Taxes, Conservative Women, Global Warming and Loans to Uncle Sam

*Where were you on Nov. 16, 2000? Most of us would find it impossible to know for certain where we were on any given day—especially if it were almost a decade ago. But for one hedge-fund manager, his whereabouts for four days in 2000 was worth almost $27 million. That’s how [...]

Dismantling the Berlin Wall

On the night of Nov. 9, 1989, the most hated symbol of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, was turned into a pile of rubble. All night long, East and West Germans celebrated their new freedom by smashing the 28-mile-long (and 28-year-old) barrier. The following morning, East German troops were ordered to [...]

What Obama Should Do and Shouldn’t Have Done, a Deficit and Ted Turner

*What Barack Obama should do. A Straight Talk salute to Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, for the best suggestion I’ve heard regarding Obama’s acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize. Here’s what she said: “What he ought to do, frankly, is send the mother of a fallen American [...]

A Really Frightening Halloween

The night before Halloween was really frightening 71 years ago.
It was on Oct. 30, 1938 that Orson Welles produced a radio drama for CBS called The War of the Worlds. The studio duplication of a live newscast was so realistic that thousands of people did not realize the program was a play. [...]

Barack’s Ignoble Award

Barack’s Ignoble Award

When the Nobel Committee awarded Barack Hussein Obama the Nobel Peace Prize it broke its own rules. Obviously the fix was in. But you shoudn’t be surprised. When it comes to honoring one of their own and advancing the cause of their dubious socialist schemes, elitists of the international left don’t need no stinkin’ rules. Keep reading to learn what Obama’s award means…

Congressional Honor, Friends and Term Limits

*A congressional honor role. Here’s a tip of the hat to the seven House members of the Congressional Black Caucus who voted to defund the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). They were Sanford Bishop of Georgia, William Lacy Clay of Missouri, John Conyers of Michigan, Artur Davis of Alabama, Hank Johnson of Georgia, Kendrick Meet of Florida and Laura Richardson of California. Since there are 35 members of the Congressional Black Caucus in the House of Representatives, this means that a staggering 80 percent of them voted not to stop taxpayer funds from going to an organization that has been caught on video at least five times offering advice on how to practice slavery.

Cavalcade of Stars Performed in Musical “Girl Crazy”

On Oct. 14, 1930, “Girl Crazy,” a new musical by George and Ira Gershwin, premiered at the Alvin Theater on Broadway. The show made stars of Ginger Rogers (who sang “Embraceable You”) and Ethel Merman (who belted out “I Got Rhythm,” among other numbers)…

Ray Kroc Legacy More Than Food

Ray Kroc, the founder of the world’s most successful fast food chain, was born 107 years ago this week. The one-time milkshake machine salesman was born on Oct. 5, 1902. He opened his first McDonald’s 52 years later. Today, it is almost impossible to grasp how huge the company he founded has become.

Watching ACORN Get Chopped Down

Watching ACORN Get Chopped Down

The German word “schadenfreude” translates roughly as “taking pleasure in the misfortune of others.” Now the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) is under scrutiny after video tape showed ACORN employees offering advice to a man and woman posing as a pimp and prostitute on how to skirt state and federal laws. Geopolitical Editor Chip Wood is now watching ACORN get its come-uppance, and he’s enjoying it.

A Growing Deficit, Missing Millionaires, Red Hot China and More American Ingenuity

Thanks to the recession, the Federal government is collecting less in taxes than expected, but increased spending is ramping up the deficit. The recession is also affecting millionaires, and the ranks of that group fell by 15 percent last year. But the recession isn’t affecting China as much, as almost one-third of new listings on Nasdaq are Chinese companies. American ingenuity hasn’t been stifled either. To learn more on these subjects, continue reading…

The Model T: Ford’s Great Promise and a Legacy Derailed

It was 101 years ago this week, on Oct. 1, 1908, that Henry Ford unveiled what would become the most popular automobile in the world, the Model T. Ford promised, “I will build a car for the great multitude. No man making a good salary will be unable to own one and enjoy with his family the blessings of hours of pleasure in God’s wide open spaces.”

John Paul Jones and the Bonhomme Richard

There are many things wrong with public education in this country, as we all know. But one thing that’s almost never mentioned is how little young people today learn about many of the heroes we were taught to admire. f you want to see evidence of this, play a word-association game with any teenager you know. Ask them to tell you about John Paul Jones, the Bonhomme Richard, or the phrase, “Sir, I have not yet begun to fight!” You’ll be sorely disappointed with the answers.
